The Power of Net Positive: Why Strengths Matter More Than Perfection
Life is complex, fast-paced, and, let’s be honest, occasionally messy. In our personal and professional lives, we often fall into the trap of believing that success requires a flawless performance. We think we have to get every interaction right, make every decision perfectly, and never let our vulnerabilities show.
But what if we shifted the goalpost?
What if, instead of perfection, we aimed for a
Net Positive Impact?
The Philosophy of "Net Positive"
The reality is that we won’t get everything right. We are human.
However, if our total contribution to our teams, our families, and our communities creates more value than it consumes, we have achieved something remarkable.
And the most effective vehicle for reaching this net positive state isn’t fixing our weaknesses; it’s intentionally leveraging our strengths.
How Strengths Drive Impact
When we lean into our natural talents, we aren't just "doing a task"; we are contributing to the world in a way that is uniquely impactful and has the potential to create a positive ripple effect because leveraging our strengths allows us to contribute at a level that simply isn’t possible with our lesser themes. Our strengths are the superpowers that help us deliver a positive impact.
But not only that, when we understand our strengths and how we show up, we become keenly aware of strengths in action. This is a tool for us to spot how others show up and how our strengths best work together. By acknowledging the unique contributions of those around us, we help them recognize and be at their best, which ultimately elevates all of us, the moment, the situation, and the impact.
The Balancing Act: Awareness and Humility
But it is about more than just knowing our strengths - having a net positive impact requires the self-awareness to keep them in balance and the willingness to act.
Remember, every strength has its "watch points", you know, those moments where a talent might be over-extended, underutilized, or misapplied. To stay in the "net positive" zone, we must:
- Recognize the Vulnerabilities: Know when our greatest strengths are starting to cause friction.
- Practice Humility: Have the courage to admit when a situation isn't going perfectly and know how we are contributing to the moment.
- Pivot in the Moment: Set our egos aside and be willing to adjust our approach to ensure the final result is for the greater good of the mission, the team, or the goal.
When we recognize our strengths as contributions, understand the strengths of others, and have a willingness to manage our strengths in the moment, we lean closer to success.
Success Isn’t Perfect
Hear me when I say this: things don’t have to go perfectly to be successful. We don’t have to be a perfect leader, team member, parent, or partner to leave the world better than we found it.
By tapping into our strengths, staying aware of our greatest contributions and watch points, and let’s not forget, championing the brilliance in others, we can create a legacy of impact that far outweighs the occasional stumble.
So as you move through your day, I leave you with this - Aim for the good. Aim with strengths. Aim for the net positive impact.
